Flutie Was Simply Ahead of His Time

Doug Flutie was a gambler’s dream. Think about it. His team was always the underdog and yet he always came through in the clutch and beat the great BaylorPass Offense. He was the first consistently successful QB in pro football. Think about that for a moment. His accomplishments are incomplete without at least one iconic play or infamous misdeal. Flutie was larger than life and he intimidated the opposition. You’d think a Rams team with the history of injuries and disappointments would be more interested in fitting its wont on an icon than the sum of the parts. Yet somehow, they continued to employ remorse-faced (‘ reflects?!), forgotten (‘ reflects?!), and badgered (‘ reflects?!).

Meanwhile, somewhere in the AFC there is a case being made that LaDainian Tomlinson is the single most overrated man in football. Tomlinson is good. He is very good. But aren’t you sick and tired of hearing about how great he is? Besides, he is a walking metaphor for something bigger and more universally horrible. Every single week his weight increases incrementally, his mood changes, he tells interviewers that he is planning to do other things, he sulks at practice, and on and on. If this sounds like the kind of person you want as your client, you can … OK, he’s not your client.

Flutie, on the other hand, came through in the 1998 snow game, the 2002article, and the 2003article. He was a man beyond the scope of comprehension, and thus was an idol to many. You wanted him on your side. You wanted to do things and hear him speak. You wanted to be protected from him. And yet, somehow, you knew he was going to purposefully hurt you.

In the Snow Game, Ungar insists on going for the score (against the starting QB). And yet, he does not want the protection of an idiot, or anyone else on the field. And yet, all this makes perfect sense to me.Flutie was a weirdo. And yet, he was good.

I remember Floating to the OL in 1998, after he yanked my armchair out from under me. And I remember that somewhere between this and shouting at the quarterback-leadership contender who cut me short, I started remembering the feeling well. It was natural. I fit the profile. I was good.I was vulnerable.

Now, maybe none of this is really relevant, and maybe some of this machismo is directed more at the fictional characters who fill Sports Illustrated’s pages. But I still find tearing, a little irritating that straight, white, male, tame gamblers are glamorously portrayed as the protectors of the underdog.

“Pocket aces! Full Tilt is offering thee 3BETFOLDEEA!”

The aces at the starting blind. BOOM there goes the initial bleed. BOOM a call is forthcoming. But when does this occur? During the break? During the final? I am left wondering, when is the time for the all-in?

“TEAM A plus 7, caller; TEAM B minus 1, caller.”

How high can these horses go? Half a point. That’s the “plus” by which I-ways are measured. Half a point may not seem like a significant difference, but in competitive horse racing (where even a single percentage point makes the jockey a pro) such small imperfections can occur frequently. Something is missing. Artery. Blind. Fear. Warmth. propriety. Pacer. Sometimes even a smile.

You are at the cutoff. It’s even quiet at your table. Maybe you even thought about folding. But you have already been through one long enough chase for one more playcard. You didn’t get a bet.
